“Access City Award” – applications are open
The promotional video for the award
How can cities become more accessible to people with disabilities? The “Access City Award” is an award by the European Commission which showcases examples of cities that have taken the right steps. The award not only acknowledges how a city has reduced physical barriers, but also looks at progress made in including people with intellectual disabilities. Last year’s winner Ljubljana, for example, has many initiatives to promote employment opportunities.
2019 is the ninth year of the Access City Award. The main award is open to European cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. This year, cities with fewer than 50 000 inhabitants may participate in one category of the so-called special cultural heritage awards.
The European Commission puts an emphasis on accessibility for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cities are asked how they have.
The deadline for applications is 16 September 2018.
If you know about a city in your region which has done efforts to improve accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities, please tell the city administration about the Access City Award. It is an excellent opportunity to promote accessibility for people with intellectual disabilities.
As the cities would like to get in contact with previous winners and other stakeholders a Yammer network was created. This network is an opportunity for individuals, administrations, companies and associations to join the debate and share their practices to improve accessibility in EU cities.
The Access City Award Ceremony will take place on 4 December 2018 during the European Day of Persons with Disabilities conference.

If a city gets this award, it means that
this city is accessible for people with disabilities.

Ljubljana won the “Access City Award” last year.
