The European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) has published a briefing paper analysing the current state of the Social Services labour market, in terms of its job creation potential, development barriers, and problem areas where the European Commission should further concentrate its efforts.

The demand for social services has constantly increased in the past years and will continue to grow, motivated partially by the fact that Europe is aging. But EASPD believes that the European Union (EU) should shift from looking at these changes in demographic dynamics as challenges, but instead see them growth opportunities. With unemployment at an all-time high in several European countries, and 120 million people living in or at the risk of poverty, training and employing Social Services staff presents a viable solution for two urgent problems: unemployment and providing adequate care and assistance for persons with disabilities.
The economic crisis and the austerity measures have had a serious impact on the lives of persons with disabilities, as 75% of all funding received by service providers linked to the disabilities sector comes from public sources. Therefore EASPD calls on the EU Commission to issue a Working Paper detailing ways in which to improve the current state of the Social Services Sector, identifying new ways of exploiting the sector’s potential and creating future employment opportunities.
