Crisis means that governments have problems with money.
Because of the crisis, some governments give less money This is not fair. Organisations of people with disabilities started a campaign |
The European Network of Independent Living (ENIL) in collaboration with the European Disability Forum (EDF) and the European Foundation Centre’s Consortium on Human Rights and Disability (EFC) launched a campaign to highlight the impact of disability cuts in the anticipation of the European Parliament elections of May 2014. Demanding equal rights and opportunities for all citizens, the campaign wants the newly elected European Parliament to prioritise persons with disabilities on its political agenda.
The campaign aims to inform society about the severe cuts in disability support resulting from the austerity measures adopted by the European governments in response to the crisis. The organisations encourage NGO’s, individuals and all supporters across Europe to join this wakeup call and, take a local action to support the campaign. Any activity, such as a protest, discussion, flash mob or an open letter to the parliament can contribute to raise awareness about the impact of cuts on the lives of people with disabilities and send a strong message to the governments of EU countries.
Moreover, persons with disabilities can share their story on the campaign’s website which collects testimonies of people who experienced the negative impact of disability cuts. The website also offers good practices of supporting independent living as well as research and other evidence on the impact of the crisis on lives of disabled citizens. These data aims to be a loudspeaker about unfair live situations of many people with disabilities nowadays and push the newly elected European Parliament to act.
As a part of the campaign, the organisations will organise a press conference in Brussels on the same day as the simultaneous actions will take place.
