Debating Europe, the European Disability Forum (EDF) and the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) have launched a series of online debates focusing on issues concerning disability, discrimination and accessibility in the European Union (EU). The initiative wants to raise awareness of the many problems Europeans with disabilities are facing daily.
Regardless of the fact that more than 80 million people with disabilities live in the EU, serious accessibility barriers are still present across the 28 Member States. Mobility, education, healthcare or employment are just some of the areas where much more work needs to be done if we are to build an inclusive Europe. Debating Europe brought these matters to the discussion table, involving, among others, David Hay, EUD Communications Officer, Aurélie Baranger, Director of Autism Europe, Yannis Vardakastanis, EDF President, and Ádám Kósa, the first MEP to use Deaf Sign Language in the European Parliament.
The first debate’s topic was EU’s commitment to uphold the rights of people with disabilities, while the second aims to answer the question of what can be done in order to create a more inclusive European labour market.

Debating Europe: Debating Europe is a project in partnership with Friends of Europe, Europe’s World, the European Parliament, Microsoft and Gallup. Since its launch in 2011, Debating Europe has interviewed more than 600 policy-makers and experts from across the political spectrum.
EUD: Based in Brussels, Belgium it is a not-profit European non-Governmental organisation (ENGO) comprising National Associations of the Deaf (NADs). It is the only supranational organisation representing Deaf people at European level.
EDF: The European Disability Forum is an independent NGO that represents the interests of 80 million Europeans with disabilities. EDF was created in 1996 by its member organisations to make sure decisions concerning disabled people are taken with and by disabled people.
