As part of MTFD project, we organised an online event about how EU institutions could make sure they are also fostering the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the labour market.

On Wednesday 14 October,  

Inclusion Europe organised the fifth online event  

as part of the project “My Talents. For Diversity”.  

There were 4 speakers:  

  • Rebekka Wiemann 
  • Katrin Langensiepen 
  • Stefan Trömel 
  • Silvia Muñoz 

Rebekka Wiemann works at the Council of the European Union

Rebekka explained how the Council of the European Union  

supports people with disabilities 

  • The building of the Council of the European Union is accessible. 
  • The Council of the European Union creates guidelines on reasonable accommodations.  
  • The Council of the European Union organises paid traineeships for people with disabilities.  

Katrin Langensiepen is the only female MEP with a visible disability.  

Katrin worked with 9 NGOs to write a draft report  

on equal treatment in employment 

They demand a lot of things to change in Europe

For example: 

  • They want that persons with disabilities get support to find a job. 
  • They want persons with disabilities to be paid the same as persons without disabilities.  
  • They want that persons with disabilities feel safe in their workplace.

Stefan Trömel works at the United Nations

Stefan talked about the United Nations Disability Strategy.  

The United Nations Disability Strategy is a plan 

This plan helps the United Nations include  

people with disabilities in everything they do. 

For example:  

  • Help more people with disabilities to work for the United Nations. 
  • Give staff information and training about how to include people with disabilities.

Silvia Muñoz works at Plena inclusión in Spain.   

Plena inclusión is an organisation that works  

for the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities 

Silvia presented a project of Plena inclusión 

This project supports the public sector  

to employ people with intellectual disabilities.

For example, Plena inclusión  

  • prepares employment calls, 
  • provides easy-to-read trainings materials for candidates, 
  • supports people with intellectual disabilities with job coaches.

Our work brings the voice of people with intellectual disabilities and their families where decisions about their future are made.

This has always been incredibly important. It is even more so with the Covid pandemic drastic impact on their rights and lives.
