The European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) is organising a conference on Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) programmes “Growing Together” on 21-22 April 2016 in Chisinau, Moldova.
ECI programmes are designed to support young children who have been identified as being at risk of having developmental delay or disabilities. The emphasis is on childhood – from prenatal to eight years of age – which is widely considered the most important developmental stage. Childhood determines the quality of health, learning, social-emotional and general well-being of an individual across their life span. High quality ECI services can alter a child’s development trajectory, improving outcomes for the individual, their family and the community. It is also cheaper for national governments than providing treatment at a later stage.
The conference will take an analytical look at the development of national strategies needed to set up quality community-based ECI services by bringing together organisations of persons with disabilities, family organisations, disability service providers, researchers and policy makers at national and international level. The event will offer a transnational exchange of mutual learning for best practices in ECI. Participants and speakers will be able to share innovative methods and models and identify barriers in legislation, funding, training, which currently hinder the facility of quality support in the ECI field.
The event will boast exciting workshops, an array of interesting talks on innovative solutions and an attendee list of influential players in the intellectual disability field. Dr. Magdi Birtha, Inclusion Europe’s Policy Officer, will be part of the policy panel addressing the current challenges and future perspectives in regard to ECI development.
