UK Inclusion Europe member Mencap has announced its campaign ‘Learning Disability Work Experience Week 2014’ encouraging companies to provide work experience placements for people with intellectual disabilities.

Following the success of the campaign in 2013, Mencap and Inclusive Employers are looking for more companies to join the 2013 cohort for the event, which will take place from 10 to 16 November.
The campaign offers a vital employment opportunity to people with intellectual disabilities, providing not only an insight into specific job roles but a CV-enhancing experience.
Aside from supporting people with intellectual disabilities in pursuing a career, the placements also prove to be hugely beneficial to employers. Statistics show that in the UK, hiring people with intellectual disabilities can save companies up to £2,000 (approx. 2,500 euros) in light of lower than average sickness rates and higher job satisfaction.
With as little as 7% of people with intellectual disabilities in paid employment in the UK, the 2014 campaign will see Mencap join forces with companies such as McDonalds and Enterprise Rent-a-Car in providing work experience opportunities.
People with intellectual disabilities have an equal right to employment accessibility and Mencap’s scheme can be a radical step towards the highlighting of the advantages of hiring people with intellectual disabilities, while offering invaluable experience within a work environment.
